In real life, Jeanette MacDonald loved clothing. The truth be told, MacDonald didn't set fashions like Garbo or Crawford. However, on the screen, MacDonald's niche was in period films. She was like a fairytale princess. She was at home in costumes and could carry them beautifully. At Paramount, Travis Banton did her wardrobe, but he didn't do her justice. At MGM, Adrian designed all MacDonald's film wardrobe, particularly the costumes. Adrian was an expert at designing historical costumes, without subverting the personality of the wearer. MacDonald enjoyed working with Adrian and was never temperamental in her fitting sessions.
