New Moon was the sixth teaming of MacDonald and Eddy and was based on a 1928 operetta with music by Sigmund Romberg. MGM had filmed it once before in 1930 with Lawrence Tibbett and Grace Moore, but it was a flop. This time it was Naughty Marietta all over again, with a similar plot line. Again, it was a big hit for MacDonald, Eddy and MGM. In many of the big cities, audiences gave standing ovation applause after every duet the two stars sang.
