The third teaming of MacDonald and Eddy turned out to be a bigger hit, in fact MGM's worldwide grossing film for 1937. Maytime was based on a musical play by Rida Johnson Young and Sigmund Romberg, and is considered to be the best operetta that the screen had ever seen. It was beautifully photographed and lavishly mounted, with gowns by Adrian. It was Jeanette MacDonald's personal favorite film, where she plays Marcia Mornay, an aging and forgotten opera star that recounts her tragic love affair to a young lady who is having trouble with her beau.
