Jeanette MacDonald died on January 14, 1965 in Houston, Texas while awaiting emergency open-heart surgery by world famous heart specialist Dr. Michael DeBakey. Gene Raymond was at her deathbed. She was 61. Her funeral was held on January 18, 1965, at Forest Lawn Cemetery. It was one of the largest funerals in Hollywood history, attracting 10,000 fans as well as the famous from show business and politics. Attendees included Ronald Reagan, Jack Oakie, Spencer Tracy, Allan Jones, Nelson Eddy, Gale Sherwood, Lew Ayres, Ralph Edwards, Jose Iturbi, Joe E. Brown, Leon Ames, Lloyd Nolan, Mary Pickford, Greer Garson, Jane Powell, Irene Dunne, Alfred Hitchcock, Maurice Chevalier, Joe Pasternak, Harry Truman, Richard Nixon, Dwight Eisenhower, Chief Justice Earl Warren, Senator George Murphy and Senator Barry Goldwater.
